Note that for 6.8.0, I had to download the file with a browser and scp it over to the media host because of 301 redirects on the download pages. I create a softlink using /opt/ums so that when we need to upgrade, we can just point the softlink to the new directory while not touching the config files that we will be using in /etc/ later on. After the download is complete, unpack the file with tar. You can check the UMS webpage to find the latest version. Then we download the latest UMS package from sourceforge. I’m going to use the /opt directory for the install. With Java installed, we now need to add some other pre-reqs: apt-get install mediainfo dcraw vlc-nox mplayer mencoder apt-get install software-properties-commonĪpt-get install openjdk-8-jre openjdk-8-jre-headless So, working with any Ubuntu 14.04 or 16.04 server, here is my step by step to get UMS installed and working.įirst you must have Java 8 JRE installed on the server. It is easy to install and, at least for now, streams and transcodes every media file I have to support playback on any device including the PS3, PS4, and the sony SMP-N200 I use on other TVs. And although the PS3MediaServer was a great solution, it did have some shortcomings, especially with certain file formats or file containers. Since I can install a free codec so that WMP can access a folder that is something but still, one app for all would be nice.Universal Media Server is a fork off the very useful PS3 and PS4 Media Server. Personally, I do not use WMP but the wife does and I can get "points" if she does not have to do anything other than using the Windows Media Device and open up WMP. I thought that was what UMS was good for and so far it fits a couple of these. W4A -> something -> Panasonic Bluray Player W4A -> something -> Samsung Bluray Player It would be nice to have only one file on disk (preferably w4a) That way I can have the mapping: ![]() When I add a some I have to add it in three places. Presently I have apple lossless, flac, wmp3 (lossy). I am coming to the conclusion that this cannot be done. I have tried everything to get WMP as a client to UMS. I am thinking that this is better as well. I have turned off the firewall on the machines to see if it was that but still nothing.Īny idea why WMP is not showing files/songs? So other systems are working fine but not WMP. ![]() The Media Player spins for about three seconds and then displays "No files have been found on this remote library." I was testing with Windows Media Player and found out that no matter what computer I was on, the Network Media Devices displayed the Universal Media Player in the list, I could double click on it and in Windows Media Player the Universal Media Player was listed under the "Other Libraries" option as "Universal Media Server " but when I looked at the Music/Album selection I get: "Contacting the remote media library". The next thing I did was go out to my Samsung TV and tried to see if I could see and play the files there. The folders and such searched were listed along the bottom of the display. This was a headless server so I brought up the UI on another server and did a scan there. ![]()
